Default Laika Kreos motorhome

A relatives has a Laika Kreos 3003 motorhome and is puzzled by a possible
"typo" on the original and the lack of a second VIN plate when the original
conversion was carried out. The Mercedes chassis was produced in 2001 and
the conversion carried out in 2002. The registration document still its max
weight as 3,800kg but the original VIN plate, the only one on the vehicle,
still shows its max weight as 3,500kg.
The query over the VIN plate is that the digit denoting the year of
manufacture is stamped as 2, denoting 2002, although it wasn't made after
2001. The registration document shows this digit as 1...
The DVLA website has been of little use as neither the VIN plate number nor
the one-digit-different registration document number both show something
like void, with a checksum error on their site.
Does anyone have any experience of these vehicles who could shed some light
on it, please?
Thanks
Chris

AFAIK, the "2" in the appropriate place on the VIN number will denote the
model year, which is not necessarily the build year. I can't speak for
Mercedes, but other manufacturers regularly introduce the following year's
models part way through a given year.
If this is the case, the it would be quite possible for a 2002 model year
base to have been built in (maybe the second half of) 2001.
Maybe a visit to a Mercedes dealer is in order.

I understand your reasoning but it doesn't explain the difference between
the VIN plate and the registration document nor the lack of the uprated
weight limit from 3,500kg on the VIN plate to 3,800kg on the reg doc.
Although the chassis is Mercedes the conversion is Italian.
Will pass on the suggestion about Merc dealer visit
Thanks
Chris
