Default Trailer Stability Programs

Has anyone had any experiance of this new(to me) feature of the ESP
programs fitted to lots of cars now. Does it work or do you have to
get into a snake to find out?

I have a new Passat on order. Should be ready for collection tomorrow but
the dealer is having problems configuring the computer for towing electrics.
I have spent many hours trying to get to the bottom of ESP / TSP and how it
works. When you turn on Passat ESP it is supposed to help you recover should
the car go out of control. If you have VW towing electrics and a caravan
connected ESP becomes TSP, Trailer Stability Platform, which is supposed to
help recover from snake situations. It detects the movement induced in the
car by the snaking caravan and corrects it by applying individual car
brakes. If you have ESP turned on and the towing wiring is not VW the car
computer either cannot be programmed for towing / has not been programmed
for towing this can be very dangerous as the car is not aware that a caravan
is being towed and tries to apply ESP correction for a car only. This
correction is the opposite to what is required to correct for a snake and
could start a snake or make a snake worse. If you have a car with ESP and no
TSP you would probably be better off by not using ESP while towing.
