Default Site Review - Porlock (Somerset)

I've just returned from Sparkhayes Campsite in Porlock on the
northern edge of Exmoor. Bear in mind that this was a bank
holiday weekend, and the start of half term to boot:
I didn't book; I just turned up with my husband, five children,
minibus and two tents. No problem - we just arrived, found a
space, colonised it and proceeded to set up camp near to one of
the drinking water standpipes that are dotted around. Over the
weekend I discovered the following:

* There's no meter on the showers, and the water is lovely and
hot. In fact, I had to turn it down first thing in the morning
because I didn't fancy being scalded;
* Toilet facilities are adequate, clean and well looked after,
including being stocked with toilet paper;
* The liquid soap dispenser was kept topped up; likewise the
paper towels;
* There are plenty of hooks near the showers for hanging clothes
up;
* The shower curtains are long enough and wide enough that
clothes and towels don't get splashed;
* There are prominently-marked fire extinguishers all around the
site, complete with instructions on fire drill;
* 'Mine host' is friendly and doesn't interfere with his guests.
He appears in the morning to collect the money; other than that
he's just 'around' but not in the way. "I don't have rules", he
told me, "People come on holiday to have a good time, not to have
rules".
* Open fires are not allowed; barbecues (on legs) are allowed by
the fire points
* Dogs are welcome as long as they're on the lead whilst on site;
* Ear plugs are advisable: even if your fellow campers are quiet
the crows start up at first light and carry on until dusk.
* The ground tends to be firm by the wall separating the two
fields that comprise the site - take spare tend pegs!
* The reviews are quite right:

Overall: definitely recommended. I'd go back there tomorrow if I
could :-)

I was there over the last ( May ) bank holiday.

Same here - we arrived after a scenic ride from the Isle of Wight,
( http://www.moonshiners.org.uk/2004gurtgallybagger.htm )
and found the site empty.

I've been using that site since the late 1970s - sadly there's now talk
of it being sold
for housing development............I only hope it's idle gossip.
