Never had to think about this before. But does the hook up just charge the

Depends on your system (ours charges both on mains hookup), best advice
is to check with the dealer/manufacturer of your motorhome.

Mine certainly charges both. Every time I go and pick it up out of storage
I have to leave it on the mains for half an hour before the engine will turn
over.

Generally they are on a split charge system, this is to stop the cranking
battery being discharged with the leisure battery, however it is fairly easy
to fit a second split charger to charge the van battery, but if you just
wire it through without the split, you run the risk of not remembering to
disconnect and having a flat cranking battery.

Interesting,
I haven't come across one that charges both batteries, curious as to how the
system is wired.
Could it mean that both batteries are supplying power to the interior when
the motorhome is stopped being used for leisure purposes. If so, it could
drain the engine battery and cause problems on starting after long stops.

Our van, an Autotrail, has a means of switching forn van to vehicle. Also
you can buy a little gadget from Van Blitz (www.vanblitz.com) costing about
70 will do the job for you automatically.

Ours is a Hymer and only draws power from the leisure battery, nothing
is connected to the van battery (except alarm, radio etc.), it has a
split system which charges the leisure battery and the van (if required)
at the same time from mains. This also happens with the Rapido A class,
can't remember the exact model, be surprised if this wasn't the case
with a lot of modern vans (our 1998 AutoSleeper Polensa had the same setup).
