How would someone know how long its used in the UK? If its stored off street
for 9 months a year does that count as unused in the UK?

You might want to consider Eire "Vehicle Registration Tax" (VRT) before
making a final decision. AIUI this is a duty calculated as a percentage of
open market value and payable when a vehicle (new or used) is first
registered in Eire. Campers must be presented for individual valuation and
AFAICT the duty could run into thousands for most.

See http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/services/bus_vrt.htm for info.

A good point, my camper van is a very old one that I imported into Ireland
from Germany. The VRT was 399.00 euro but the customs office did not define
how they arrived at that figure.
Insurance here is another consideration although there is at present a
broker in Dublin who specialises in it and runs a type of group scheme where
everybody pays from March to March each year.

Not strictly true. My Dolmen policy runs for 12 months from the date I
started it...and my policy most definitely doesn't run from March ;o)

My policy and all others who use the same broker scheme runs from March to
March, if you join later in the year the premium is reduced somewhat but
your renewal will be in the next March. You can of course get camper van
insurance with anybody who will quote you, and then it will run for 12
months from start date. However my house and car are with FBD but
they quoted an additional premium of over 1000.00 euro for the camper, the
broker charged about 300.00.

I'm sorry but you're wrong (assuming you're also with Dolmen, of which I'm
99% sure you are)
I've been with Dolmen for about 4 yrs. I renew in December *every* year...
;o)
There's a certain Irish camper club who sort out insurance for their
motorcaravan members on a group scheme through Dolmen, *their* (as in the
club's group scheme) runs from March to March...but other camper policies
with Dolmen run for 12 months from inception...and pay the same money (was
?313 this year I think, or somewhere close) ;o)
The majority of insurance companies in Ireland won't touch campers with a
barge pole....Dolmen are the only company to offer a specific 'camper'
policy

I am NOT with Dolmen. I have never even heard of them in fact. I get my
insurance from Hibernian via Stuart brokers in Dublin and it is "Camper
specific".
