Default Change to MOT

According to an article in the CC mag this month checking of tow bars
will now be part of the MOT.

The quote from the Ministry implies that there are no statistics to show
that there have been any accidents attributable to tow bars in poor
condition. It just seem to be a "good idea".

It may be more complicated but is it better?

Its a pretty cursory inspection. Personally I don't think it goes far
enough - they don't take the cover off the ball to measure the ball size for
instance.

I doubt very many vehicles will fail this section of the MOT, but when you
hear stories of rogue fitters missing some of the bolts off their towbars,
it has to be worth doing whilst doing the rest of the MOT

Is there ANY evidence of accidents (in the UK) resulting directly from
a problem with a tow bar?

It would appears not as the Dot was quoted as saying some accidents MAY
have been caused by such faults.

I am not against it being included provided it doesn't cost nay more for
inspecting something which has never been known to cause an accident.

Knee-jerk reaction to legislate against something that doesn't need
legislating for. Another way to get (more) money from us.
