Spam is getting worse, I have got a spam filter in my email system
which works great but the only way spam can be stopped on newsgroups,
as far as i know, is for a spam filter at the source of the newsgroup,
nothing we can do unfortunately.

As an example:

I was a member of the folding caravan forum and got sick of spam
postings on my threads so in the end i just unsubscribed, which is a
shame.

I am also a member of a sea fishing forum which is policed rigidly and
there is NEVER any spam, however its sometimes too easy for spammers
to join and thats the reason why, as far as i know there is no filter
in usenet groups.

However - I seem to remember, years ago when i got newsgroups via my
broadband provider rather than web usenet there was a filter built in
to my software - you may want to check with your provider.

Personally I use web usenet via google groups as my provider does not
have a newsgroup system so I just ignore them.

Have found this which may be of interest, it includes a link for
reporting but the area is very wide really.

Stop sending it!

- the odd handbag advert now and then is better than the spam post that
kept appearing a couple of years ago.

The easiest way to reduce spam is to let someone else do it for you. If you
reconfigure your Usenet feed source away from giganews to someone like
news.eternal-september.org who filter all of the spam out for you by
default.

You will still need to post through giganews, unless you are prepared to
pay eternal-september, but downloading from eternal-september is free.
