Default Tow Bar fitting on new Vauxhall Meriva

I recently bought a new car & had a factory fitted tow-bar. The
tow-bar came with a 13 pin electrical fitting - somewhat to my
surprise. I have been told by Vauxhall that this is a 'universal'
standard. Looking in the brochure the towbar is specified as 12N/S -
does this refer to the old 7 pin fitting or this new 13 pin fitting?
I want Vauxhall to replace the fitting - but they just told me to get
an adaptor or change the fittings on my caravan/trailer/bike racks
etc.

12N & 12S refer to the traditional 7 pin sockets - 12N for road lights and
12S (more or less) for internal 12v supply - which your caravan needs.

The 13 pin socket combines the functions of these two. Like the man said,
you can get an adaptor cable - but that's a bit messy. If you can show that
what you ordered was 2 7-pin sockets, insist that they re-work it - so that
you get what you need without having to use any adapters.

13 pin electrics (ISO 11446) are widely accepted across much of Europe as
the standard but not universally so and certainly not the UK. 12N/12S
(ISO/DIS 1724 and ISO/DIS 3732) refers specifically to the system used in
the UK.

The two are not wholly compatible. On a UK spec van pre 1998, you would
have no battery charging facility on the 13 pin system. In fact, in my
experience, most 13 pin OE electrics have only 10 pins wired, ignoring
fridge feed and fridge return also. You would typically be missing pins
10,11,12.

In any event, you should have been supplied with an adapter lead. Merc do
it, BMW do it, Ford can do it, why not Vauxhall?

I would ask the Vauxhall dealer to demonstrate that that the system supplied
will work your caravan. I don't know who your dealer is but Pentagon
Vauxhall at Derby would be able to this. I have run a training course there
for towbar fitting and they use one of my test boards.

Regards
