I have a 2.2DTi and must say that it is a better ride when towing. Good kerb
weight and feels very stable. Fuel economy good. The early frontera was an
old dog but the newer 2.2s are much more refined and has plenty of low
torque grunt. Obviously there are much better 4x4s but for the price it
does the job well.

Better in what way? At least the Frontera has selectable 2WD/4WD and
a proper chassis. It is an great tow vehicle as the engine has good
low-down torque. The 2.2DTi has excellent fuel economy and
reliability, if you buy a post 98 model. Performance and fuel economy
is apparently much better than the 2.2 petrol version.
