Default Campervan insurance for UK non resident.

It is very difficult for someone who is not a resident of the UK to obtain
insurance for a campervan.
I live permananently in Australia, but visit the UK twice a year, and I own
a 1990 Peugeot campervan. which I keep in storage near London and use twice
a year for a total of about four months for touring the UK Europe and
Ireland. When I bought it on Ebay I found only one insurance company that
would insure me, purely because I am not "a resident" of the UK. The van is
comprehensively insured for 10,000 pounds, but the premium I have to pay is
667 pounds a year, more than double the premium that a UK resident with a
similar low risk profile has to pay for comparable insurance.

I contacted over twenty UK insurance companies and insurance brokers, none
of them would insure my van except Downunder Insurance in London, who are
agents for Landmark Insurance, and specialise in insuring tourists who buy
cheap campers to tour Europe, and resell them after a trip.

Many brokers agree that the policy of insurance companies is absurd, it
makes no sense. I have references from my Australian insurers attesting to
my fault free driving record, and my van spends 8 to 9 months of the year
locked up in a secure storage yard, so any sensible analysis would tell you
that the "risk" in my insurance is much less than the average.

Landmark Insurance won't even insure me directly as they have a brokerage
agreement with Downunder Insurance which stops them selling insurance to non
residents.

So I am forced to pay more than twice the normal amount for campervan
insurance from Downunder Insurance who are clearly exploiting this
situation.

I have also owned a campervan in the USA, and there had no problem getting
comprehensive insurance at "normal" prices that Americans pay, and getting a
full refund of the unused portion of the annual premium when I sold the
camper on Ebay after a tour of six months.

Clearly there is a very rigged insurance market in the UK when this sort of
uncompetitive behaviour results in being so ripped off for insurance.

Does anyone know of any UK insurance company that will give me a fair deal
at normal prices?

DI you try the Caravan Club? Did you try finding an address in the UK
where your mail could be sent? Both these are possibles.

We tried both the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravan Club, after
getting well into the application process on the phone both advised that
they were unable to insure non residents after conferring with senior
management.

Getting an address for mail in the UK is no problem, but as I am not really
a UK resident, if I try to make out that I am, then the insurance company
may deny liability in the event of a serious claim, on the basis I misled
them as to a material fact in the application, and I could be left
uncovered.

Any other ideas please?

Downunder Insurance are the only company I know of that will cover
non-residents. You could try asking on the Motorhome List (see sig),
someone there may know different...
