Caravans banished to slow lane on M5
AIUI, the restriction is in one direction only, on an *uphill* section of
the motorway. The rationale seems to be that cars pulling trailers won't
able to maintain the permitted 60mph on this uphill stretch, and will
congestion if they're in the middle lane. Nothing to do with losing
through going too fast!
I did this last Saturday and I have a load of comments about this!
Firstly a lot of the congestion is caused by lane hoppers, people coming off
the M4 pushing their way into lane 3 slows down all the lanes, so I stay
middle lane all the way through (inner is M4 middle and outer M5) to drag my
outfit across lanes would invovle cutting someone up!
This hill in question, I was overtaking up the hill following another
trailer stuck behind a long line of MLOCs doing 50mph. These 50mph MLOCs are
the problem not towers.
Forcing caravanners into lane one will create more congestion than letting
them use lane two - are we supposed to force our way through? Yes that is it
I come to a halt in L2 to force my way into L1!
Everyone who does this knows that 2/3 lanes of very slow moving traffic
takes a while to clear.
