Default Kirkstone Pass, motorists reactions :-)

I recently went on the uk.rec.walking Expedition 16, and they were camping
at Sykeside, near Brotherswater, so it presented a problem, of how to get
there, Kirkstone Pass or he longer route down the side of Ullswater. So
I drove it solo to determine exactly what the problems were. The
gradients were no big deal, for *my* outfit, but the roads are both narrow
and winding. The Ullswater Road being worst in this respect. So I towed
both ways over Kirkstone Pass. Second gear both up and down hill and
everything went fine.

The reactions of other motorists were a treat to see. I picked up the
usual tail but they stayed about *200 yards* behind, as if I was going to
slide backwards into them. I met a car on a wide bit of road, and he just
stopped and stared. :-) Because it is officially a Pass they clearly
thought it was impassible

OK Someone will know that Sykeside is a CC CL, so it cost me an extra GBP32
:-( Initial impressions of CC members were not good, two couples were
getting very drunk and noisy which I have never seen on a CCC site. The
Magazine is clearly aimed at the More Money than Sense Brigade, so I am not
impressed with that. No doubt I will try some more CC sites and CC CLs
while my membership lasts to get a better feel for the organization and
