I am thinking of getting a another car with the intention of later on
getting a caravan. Which is the best for towing with, an automatic or manual
gearbox.

Personal choice, Auto, far less stress and faffing. Down side is you have
less feel of the wheels should they spin on wet pitches.

Both, depending on what you want,
fuel economy and outright top speed and acceleration then go for a manual.
Ease of towing, reduced strain on the driver, then go for an automatic.
i tow with a diesel automatic transit van and it is easy to forget you
have the caravan on the hook, from the ease of driving POV. i do notice
it from the fuel consumption though.

Auto first choice, once you have towed with an auto you will wonder
how you ever managed with a manual.
