Default Replacement Tow Car Choice

Hi,

I'm just about to replace my 405 1.9TD Estate - it's done nearly
120,000, but has started 'playing up' when starting, and although the
mileage is fairly low for a diesel, I've spend enough time/money
attempting to correct it. Unfortunately I'm on a bit of a budget (about
3,000 max), so my choice is a little limited - I've had a trawl
through what's available for up to that limit, and have come up with
the following list (a selection from the Autotrader website):-

2001 Y Reg VAUXHALL Vectra 2.2 LS 81,000 2,995
1998 R Reg HONDA CR-V 2.0i ES 91,000 2,595
1998 R Reg SUBARU Legacy 2.0 GL 80,000 2,495
1998 R Reg PEUGEOT 406 2.1 TD GLX 92,000 2,795 Diesel
2000 W Reg CITROEN Xsara 2.0 HDi LX 100,000 2,195 Diesel
1998 S Reg Peugeot 406 1998 cc GLX 68,000 2,995
1997 R Reg VOLVO V40 2.0i SE 64,000 2,395
1997 RENAULT ESPACE 2.2 RXE DT 5dr 75,000 2,985 Diesel
1998 R Reg MITSUBISHI Space Wagon 2.0 GLXi 80,000 2,695
1999 V Reg Daewoo Nubira 1998 cc CDX, 30,000 2,495
1999 T Reg NISSAN Primera 2.0 16v SLX 74,000 2,690
2000 VAUXHALL VECTRA 2.0 CD ESTATE 69,000 2,850

My 1.9 was only just powerful enough to tow my 5-berth Avondale Perle
Ullyses (a couple of 'hairy moments' doing hillstarts, etc!), therefore
I've gone for slightly bigger engines. Does anyone have any
view/experience with towing any of the above, and suggest either ruling
any out or following up on others. Also, if anyone has any suggestions
on what better I can get for that pricetage if I wait, then that would
also be useful. I'm really just looking for something that should last
another few years, with as little maintenance/repairs as possible (in
an ideal world!).

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Towed (1300kg) with a Nissan Primera 2.0L petrol for about 18 months
(similar mileage) and found it quite hard work. Changed over to a Land Rover
2.0 TD4 and it is like being on another planet.

Steve

Never towed with one but I have always found Subaru's to be a bit
thirsty, although that may just be the way I drive!
