Alternatively, anyone remotely interested (which I doubt) could read
about it here

it's yet another sign that the caravan era is coming to and end. rapidly
increasing fuel prices combined with the absurd cost of new caravans
(British examples of which leak like sieves and are damp within a year, or
so). excessive insurance costs, rip off site fees, and the astronomical cost
of just about *everything* connected with caravanning, mean that it will be
a virtually unknown pastime within a decade.

John Morphet is (obviously) astute enough to read the signs - and he's
baling out while he can still achieve a decent price for his assets.

Your grandchildren will ask, 'Did you *really* pull a 1500kg caravan with a
big car getting 20 mpg?!!" - to them, living in a world short of fuel, it
will be absolutely incomprehensible.

I've enjoyed caravanning, had some good times (plus some bad ones!), spent a
shed load of money - but, like it or not, the party is nearly over.

December 2005: National Caravan Council (NCC) reports that over
29,000 touring caravans were manufactured in the UK during 2005. By
year end, over 8,800 new motorhomes had been registered with the DVLA
- a record number.

In recent years the UK has become the largest market in Europe for
touring caravans. Production at the end of 2005 stood at 29,193;
although this is down from the record levels of the previous year, it
remains the second highest figure in more than a decade.

There are nearly one million leisure vehicles in use in the UK:

Leisure vehicles in use - totals
Touring caravans: 500,000
Caravan holiday homes: 335,000
Motorhomes: 120,000

" According to TGI data, 19% of adults who took a domestic
holiday as their last holiday stayed in a caravan

" More than one in four adults (26%) aged 15+ has been on a
caravan holiday in the last three years - source NOP/Mintel 2004

" Caravanning now appeals to a younger audience - Mintel's
consumer data shows that some 21% of 15-19 year olds have been
caravanning in the past three years

" Over a million people take touring caravan holidays each year
- source The Caravan Club
